Hayden Holbert’s agricultural roots run deep. Avrom Farms was bought by his grandfather in the early 1950s and has stayed in his family ever since. Even as a child, Hayden loved growing. Despite spending most of his childhood in Chicago, summers would be spent sticking seeds in the ground and waiting to see what would grow. It was like magic. In 2017, after graduating from Warren Wilson College in Ashville, NC, Hayden threw himself into his family farm. With a newfound passion for pigs and chickens, and their part in a diversified farm-ecosystem, he began producing pasture-raised, ethically-reared pork and chicken. Alongside meat, the farm also grows vegetables to sell at local farmers’ markets.
Avrom Farm needs to expand its operation to meet the needs of the market. Steward funding is being used to increase pork production through the purchase of a livestock trailer, more breeding stock, housing, feeders and a wagon for whey. It has also funded the bulk purchase of compost, seeds, and early season payroll.
Hayden is looking forward to scaling up all aspects of his farm, including increasing broiler production from 1500 to 4000. Avrom Farm is already using regenerative practices to grow vegetables, but is planning on making production more efficient using new cultivation equipment and a refrigerated trailer. With gross sales increasing from $30,000 in 2017 to $250,000, Avrom Farm is set to increase its profits year on year. Backed by exceptional agricultural training, support from his family, and a passion for regenerative agriculture, Hayden is confident that he will be able to supply his local community and beyond with exceptional produce for years to come.
