Overview

Founded in 2017, Green Box Mushrooms is a sustainably run indoor mushroom farm, growing all-natural oyster mushrooms year-round. Through using a unique bottle cultivation method, Green Box is able to consistently deliver quality products through a highly mechanized and sustainable growing process.

Owners John & Elizabeth Moon are on a mission to decentralize existing U.S. mushroom production and increase domestic sourcing, as currently ~70% of mushrooms found in the grocery stores are still imported from overseas. Green Box Mushroom’s unique bottle cultivation method relies on several main pieces of equipment to keep the growing process running smoothly. Ensuring that these machines are operating reliably and efficiently is key to scaling and producing large amounts of mushrooms to the expanding market opportunity in their region.

Use of Funds

The Moons’ background in technology is a big part of what makes the farm hum. They have utilized their unique skill sets to run a largely automated mushroom growing process, using six pieces of machinery that do everything from filling up bottles with growing substrate, scratching the surface to encourage growth, and emptying the bottles.

Over the past couple of months, it has become apparent that a few pieces of machinery are in need of an upgrade, as John has been spending more time fixing these machines. This second loan from Steward will be used to replace the machine that’s used in the mushroom growing process to empty and clean bottles. This will allow Green Box to meet their growing customer demand.

Regenerative & Sustainable Practices

Green Box Mushrooms take pride in being a sustainable and eco-friendly farm. Their sustainable cultivation practices include:

  • Growing mushrooms in reusable bottles cuts down on waste and requires less water.

  • Use of agri-waste, such as peanut hulls, are used as a natural medium to grow mushrooms. Once the mushrooms are harvested, this medium can then be repurposed as a natural compost/fertilizer.

  • Spent mushroom substrates are used to condition soil (four bulk bags can cover an acre of farmland). The substrate is filled with nitrogen and potassium, and the mycelium in the compost acts as a natural immune booster for the soil. Some studies have even shown that farmers that use mushroom compost have seen a reduced population of weed growth on their farm.

  • Shipping container growing facilities will facilitate more local production meaning shorter transportation miles from mushroom to plate.

Thanks For Participating In Our Loan!

Thank you to everyone who participated in funding Green Box Mushrooms!

Elizabeth and I are very thankful for the quick turnaround in meeting our goal. The new bottle emptier machine will be ordered shortly and we can’t wait for its arrival.

With the growing demand for our gourmet mushrooms, the new machine will allow us to spend less time fixing the machine, and more time focusing on growing and harvesting our mushrooms.

This loan will be made to Green Box Mushrooms, Inc, a Georgia domestic profit corporation, which grows and sells oyster mushrooms.

This loan is for the bottle emptying machine used in the unique growing process for Green Box’s oyster mushrooms.

The total loan amount is $54,500.00 which will assist Green Box Mushrooms in growing and expanding their business.

This loan is set at an 8% interest rate, with a 60 month term, and fully amortized monthly payments beginning 9 months after funds are disbursed.

Funds will be used to purchase the piece of equipment that empties the substrate out of the reusable bottles where the oyster mushrooms are grown. Funds include the cost of shipping and clearing customs.

Total Budget - $54,500.00
