Overview

At YundWell Pastured Poultry in Columbia County, New York, meat birds and laying hens live roam free in the open air pasture, gaining flavor and nutrients with years, and rebuilding the soil with their manure and scratching. Protected from both aerial and land predation by a team of guardian dogs--Nellie, Esther, and Roscoe--YundWell’s pastured poultry are never confined. Owners Mike Yund and Michelle Maxwell offer their chicken, eggs, and Thanksgiving turkey at their farm stand and through many local grocers, farm stores, and CSAs.

Use of Funds

YundWell’s nutritious, tasty, and ethically raised meat and eggs are building demand in their community. To support the growth of their business, they’re raising funds to purchase an automated egg washer and custom-printed egg cartons. With those in hand, they’ll be able to expand the size of their laying flock and maximize efficiency in their work.

Regenerative & Sustainable Practices

YundWell prizes the health of their birds and building the life of their soil. Unlike so many other poultry operations, their birds aren’t bred in large warehouses and kept packed together, unable to move. Mike and Michelle utilize a number of regenerative practices in their operation:

  • Animals are raised entirely on pasture, moving them strategically from field to field, allowing them to supplement their feed with wild clover, grasses, seeds, and bugs. The birds’ manure and scratching helps rebuild the soil structure and fertility of the pastures.

  • Bird welfare is centered in their practice. By regularly moving them to fresh pasture, the birds are never overcrowded, and by protecting them with guardian dogs, the birds are never confined.

  • YundWell raises slower-growing chickens (compared to industrial Cornish Crosses) from Moyer’s Chick in Quakertown, PA. Their birds live nearly twice as long as industrially raised birds, developing richer flavor and having lower fat content.
