Meet the Farmers
Charlie and Kerissa started Covey Rise Farms seven years ago as a dream to raise food for their family, and once they got their hands in the soil and boots in the dirt, they couldn't imagine their lives any other way.
Charlie grew up in the suburbs, dreaming as a child of farm fields and livestock. He graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Natural Resources Conservation and a minor in Agricultural Economics. Formerly a fundraising professional, Charlie’s experience and savvy comes to use in the networking and operations of the farm. He knows the geography of the state better than most as well as how to make due with a limited budget. He is deeply involved with the local farm bureau, is often consulted by other beginning farmers in the region, and he sits on the board of local farmers markets.
Kerissa grew up in a small rural town in Southern Ohio. Where she came from, farming was a hobby, not a full time job. Wanting to understand the connection between the soil and the ingredients in the food she ate every day, Kerissa began reading and asking and searching for a middle ground between health and affordability. Each day, Kerissa uses the knowledge she’s gained of food, the hard-work ethic of her upbringing, and her professional experience with public programs to help the farm tackle projects as well as manage their shipping, farm operations, and e-commerce.
Regenerative & Sustainable Practices
Covey Rise Farms is focused on the life and welfare of the animals they’re raising, and on regenerating and strengthening the biology of their soil. To that end they:
- Utilize rotational grazing, moving their animals between pastures on a consistent schedule to give grasses time to grow back their blades and set in deeper roots
- Keep all animals truly free-range on open pasture and handled humanely
- Don’t use any chemicals, antibiotics, or hormones
- Build their own compost to make a closed-loop system
- Only raise heritage breed pigs, from farrow to finish
