Meet the Farmer
Kirsten Simmons started growing after a concussion in 2012 knocked her off a career path as a mathematical modeler of disease transmission. She found refuge from the vertigo and tinnitus by creating a little garden tucked into the woods across the street from her rented condo. Others asked to join her, and before she knew it she was leading a community garden with support from the elementary school, the neighborhood association, and even the county. It lasted a few good years before the landowners realized it was there.
Kirsten started Ecosystem Farm in 2016 with two partners. Four months later, she was the last one farming. Most days, she describes herself as more stubborn than exhausted, and she often tries and succeeds at impossible things simply because she doesn't believe in the concept of impossible. Ecosystem Farm started in September 2016 with chest high weeds and delivered its first CSA shares 6 weeks later. The business has been profitable since then.
